Archetypes Alive
What is archetypal coaching?

The patterns already at play, made conscious.

Archetypal coaching works with the instinctual patterns of behaviour, thought and emotion that shape a life — at the level where insight becomes embodied and understanding becomes conscious choice.

01 · The patterns

“Universal patterns, always expressed personally.”

Archetypes are the instinctual patterns that resonate across culture, gender and history — the same characters appear in myths across centuries and continents. Yet each is expressed personally, through your emotional history, temperament, context and stage of life. They are not a typology and not stereotypes: they are living patterns, and they shift with awareness and choice.

Every archetype carries a gift when used consciously and a shadow when not — too much of the energy, or too little. Between the two lies the optimal zone, where the gift is available without the pattern running you. The hidden dynamics that quietly drive repeated success, conflict or stagnation usually live in the shadow side — the unconscious, unlived part of a pattern. Recognising which patterns are dominant, which are missing, and where fear or over-identification shapes your choices leads to a self-knowledge that is felt, lived and practical.

The work begins not with fixing problems but with recognising the patterns already at play — and the question shifts from “what's wrong?” to “what wants to grow?”

02 · The wheel

Ten archetypes, five realms.

The Archetypes Alive wheel organises ten archetypes across five realms — Order (Sovereign, Strategist), Relationship (Nurturer, Lover), Creativity (Dreamer, Storyteller), Change (Renegade, Transformer) and Action (Warrior, Explorer). Each realm is a complementary pair: two characters that balance one another.

Sovereign · Strategist
Order

The Realm of Order holds the Sovereign — vision, purpose, the settled decision at the centre of things — and the Strategist, who builds the structure and mastery to carry it. Overplayed, order becomes tyranny or rigidity; underplayed, nothing holds.

Nurturer · Lover
Relationship

The Realm of Relationship holds the Nurturer — care and empathy, growing and developing others — and the Lover, who meets the world through desire and beauty. Overplayed, relationship smothers or seduces; underplayed, we lose contact with what we care about.

Dreamer · Storyteller
Creativity

The Realm of Creativity holds the Dreamer — imagination and inspiration, at home with the unknown — and the Storyteller, who weaves the threads into a narrative others can follow. Overplayed, creativity drifts or deceives; underplayed, the inner music goes quiet.

Renegade · Transformer
Change

The Realm of Change holds the Renegade — invention and disruption, a lightning rod for the future — and the Transformer, who works the slower mystery of regeneration, endings and rebirths. Overplayed, change destroys for its own sake; underplayed, we live in the past.

Warrior · Explorer
Action

The Realm of Action holds the Warrior — challenge and defence, the clean yes and the clean no — and the Explorer, on a quest for adventure and truth. Overplayed, action bullies or preaches; underplayed, we play it safe.

One figure is not on the wheel at all. The Witness — the aware ego — is the audience, watching which character is on stage. The work strengthens the Witness, so that noticing a pattern becomes the moment you can choose it.

03 · How the work happens

“What wants to grow?”

The work uses symbol, story, myth and imagination — not to bypass reason, but to include what reason alone cannot reach. Learning is experiential and embodied. Because most of us carry several archetypes at once, along with their contradictions, the work holds creative tension rather than eliminating it: the Nurturer and the Warrior together make deep care with firm boundaries; the Dreamer and the Strategist together make imagination with a rational eye for detail.

In a one-to-one session, a practitioner works with one person — usually for one to two hours, in person or over video. Sessions open with where you are, work with the patterns at play, and close with integration time before you go back to your day.

In a group workshop, trained facilitators hold a residential of 8–18 people. Mornings are usually teaching, group rounds and pair work; the rest of the time is given to embodied, enacted work — stepping into an archetype, feeling it from the inside, and watching it from the Witness's seat.

In both formats the work is held without pressure and without pathology. Transitions and impasses are treated as thresholds rather than failures. Because the work engages the whole person — mind, body, inner life — the change tends to endure, integrating into daily life, relationships, leadership and decision-making. No particular belief system is required.

04 · Where it comes from

A lineage, not an invention.

The Archetypes Alive approach draws on Jungian depth psychology, myth and storytelling traditions, mythodrama, and contemporary leadership and developmental models — a lineage co-founded by Laurence Hillman and Richard Olivier, with over three decades of archetypal and mythodramatic practice behind it. Archetypes Alive is the individual-practice sibling of Archetypes at Work, which serves organisations.

The work is experiential rather than analytical. It is not therapy, though it is held by people trained to a comparable standard of care. It does not promise transformation or breakthroughs. It offers a held room, a clear map, and a quiet competence — and lets the work do what it will.

“I had read about my patterns for years. This was the first time I stood inside one, felt it from the inside, and understood I could put it down.”
